RV Repair: Replacing RV bushings and equalizer

Posted by

One thing alot of people overlook on their RV is the suspension. This is something that needs to be maintained just as much as your batteries.

When we got our RV we didn’t think much about the suspension. After our first outing we realized that we needed to raise our RV to get more ground clearance. My RV s drop brackets that allowed raising the RV by 2 1/2 inches. After pulling apart the leaf springs I realized that the brass bushings were worn and needed to be replaced.

Most RV’s have zerk fittings that grease the bushings. Our RV had this set up but looks like no one ever greased them, and the bushings were so far gone that the bolts started rubbing it’s way through the metal. So I am glad that we caught this.

We decided to replace the equalizer on both sides and opted to go with greaseless bushings. This configuration uses nylon bushings instead of brass. You don’t need to grease them but they should be replaced every 2-3 years.
